Mail-Order Prescription Policy

Searching for a Veterinary Clinic and Veterinarian is very important to us as pet owners. Our commitment to our pet(s) is a serious one – one is which a feeling of reliability and trust in our Veterinarian's ability and advice is essential. At Rochester Veterinary Hospital (RVH), we take this commitment very seriously.

There are many areas of concern when it comes to keeping our pets healthy and happy members of our family. Annual health exams and appropriate vaccinations are a given for our pets. As in the human medical field, there is ongoing research in many areas to assist us in keeping our pets healthy for as long as we are blessed to have them.

As witnessed daily on television – much as in the human medical field – the Veterinary field is constantly being bombarded by companies who are trying to compete. We continually hear that medications can be obtained more quickly, efficiently and less expensive than in the Veterinary Clinic you have come to trust. The internet and television have played a huge part in this. It is implied that these products are just as good as those sold directly by your Veterinarian.

However, what these mail order/internet companies do not tell you is that the quality and effectiveness of the products you purchase directly through them are many times not guaranteed by the companies which make them. Class-action law suits addressing this have even been filed in the Courts.

In the past, RVH has received FAX requests from mail order/internet companies to fill various prescriptions for your pets. We feel strongly that the quality control of the product supplied to you by these companies is out of our hands, and therefore not necessarily reliable and potentially ineffective for your pets. In order to continue to fulfill our commitment of reliability to you, we cannot honor these requests directly. If, however, a client wishes to pursue another company for medication, we will issue a legal prescription to that client, signed by the Veterinarian. We hope that, in doing this, you will understand that any results of obtaining that product elsewhere places the responsibility of any problems with the product on the client.

We at RVH continue to pledge our commitment to you to provide the most reliable, up-to-date and effective treatment for your precious pets. We stand behind the products which we sell, and will continue to provide competitive prices for those products.
